So, we were able to explore the bar area and the main dining area and that's it. There were 3 separate private parties being held that night and the areas where the parties were, were closed off to all other customers. So when my parents came to town for a visit, I was excited to bring them to the Safe House to have the same kind of experience I had originally had. I've been to the Safe House one other time, and we spent a solid hour after dinner exploring all of the fun things customers come to the Safe House to experience. I think I can scratch it off my roster for a while. the Safe House was a bit sloppy and uninviting this go round. but it is not so fun and not so secret as you try and vamp for 45 minutes until they get around to it. The secret mission is a fun little surprise you can buy for your guest. and then kept going up to them at regular intervals confirming that we were, indeed, ready for the secret mission experience. even though I checked in with them 10 minutes before the appointed time. Now, I'm not even going to get into the secret mission that I scheduled for my friend that ended up being 45 minutes late. This guy was so cool that he actually had come prepared (at his own expense) with a bag of pistachios to offer to patrons. just some chips or popcorn or perhaps a couple of pretzels. He said that the establishment didn't offer anything like that and we would have to order appetizers. Finally, a responsive and pleasant bartender! The drinks were procured! We asked if we could get a little something to snack on. Frustrated, we went to bar area number four which was actually the Newsroom Pub where we were able to pull a couple of frigid chairs up to the bar and once again, try and order the elusive martini. The bartender looked at me as if he'd never heard of this marvelous, magical potion called a "martini". On to the third area, where I asked for a couple of martinis. nor did it seem like anyone was in danger of actually standing behind the bar and tending to it. The bar was opened but, other than a fleeting appearance by a staff member who dashed in to procure some item, there was no one assigned to staffing it. As that minute stretched waaaay out with no more acknowledgement of our existence, we decided to move on to the second, smaller bar area. At the first bar, we were assured that the bartender would be with us in "just a minute". The Safe House has multiple bars and it was impossible to get a frickin' drink! The place was doing brisk business (it was very early on New Year's eve) but it was by no means jam packed. but the last time I was there was a real stinker. I've ended up here throughout the years, usually with a guest who's never been to Milwaukee. I would definitely recommend a visit as the decor is unique and the food is quality.OK. The staff was very nice, though the service was a bit slow. Fortunately, there was a a lot to look at while we waited for a table. The cheese curd appetizer was awesome! We did not have a reservation and the place was packed. The sandwiches were hearty and delicious. I don't remember ever eating there before, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Full disclosure, we laughed at others who did not know how to get in as we watched them on the numerous closed circuit cameras TVs. Good thing I knew to look for the secret entrance or we would have stood there like fools to the entertainment of those inside. We went for lunch so there was no door person. He loved the top secret excuse phone booth. It was great fun exploring all the spy stuff with him. This time I went with my husband who had never been there. I haven't been to the Safe House in almost 30 years.
